MAKE ROOM FOR THE BROOCH
Long before the brooch became the decorative accessory we know today, it had a much more practical purpose. Early versions date back to the Bronze Age, when fibulae were used to fasten garments and cloaks. The Romans wore them to secure clothing, while later brooches became increasingly elaborate, incorporating precious metals, gemstones and intricate designs. Over time, what began as a useful fastening became a form of personal adornment and, often, a way of expressing something about the person wearing it.
That is perhaps what makes the brooch so appealing today. Unlike many accessories, it doesn't have to be tied to one particular part of your wardrobe. A brooch can bring an old jacket to life, add personality to a simple sweater, or make a classic coat feel distinctly your own. It can be elegant and understated, playful and unexpected, or something with enough presence to become the focal point of an outfit.
And there are no real rules about where to wear one. Pin it to the lapel of a blazer or coat, fasten it at the collar of a shirt, cluster several smaller brooches together, or use one to bring a little interest to a scarf or knit.
Perhaps that's the best thing about them: a brooch doesn't simply complete an outfit. It can make it feel more personal. In a time when so much fashion can feel instantly recognizable, adding something with a little history, character or individuality is an easy way to make what you're wearing feel more like you.
